Arizona has a rich history that is steeped in the stories of the people who have called this state home over the centuries. January 24th is no exception, as this day has seen a number of significant events that have shaped Arizona’s past and continue to influence its present and future.

  • In 1857, the Gadsden Purchase was signed, which was a treaty between the United States and Mexico that transferred a large portion of what is now southern Arizona and New Mexico from Mexico to the United States. This treaty helped to establish the current border between the two countries and played a key role in the settlement of the American Southwest.
  • In 1912, Arizona became the 48th state to join the United States. This event was a major milestone for the state, which had been a territory for many years prior. This event also marked the end of a long and difficult journey for the people of Arizona, who had worked tirelessly to achieve statehood.
  • In 1963, The Arizona State College was renamed Arizona State University. This university is the largest public research university in the United States by enrollment on a single campus.
  • In 1971, The Phoenix Suns played their first game in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as an expansion team, they played against the San Diego Rockets.

These events, and many others, have shaped Arizona into the unique and diverse state it is today, and they continue to inspire and influence the state’s residents and visitors alike. January 24th, in particular, holds a special place in Arizona’s history, as it marks the day when the state officially became a part of the United States, and a major expansion in education and sports.
