Local artists are invited to submit work for upcoming exhibits at the Herberger (artwork by Nasim Nourian courtesy of Herberger Theater Center). Downtown Phoenix’s Herberger Theater Art Gallery features creative and inspiring work that showcases Arizona artists and provides a platform for visual art. Each year, 10-12 exhibits are held in its two galleries located on the second level of the theater. In honor of Independence Day, CrossRoads United Methodist will screen “Four Chaplains: Sacrifice at Sea,” Sunday, July 3, at 10:45 a.m. The documentary movie tells the true story of four American chaplains who willingly sacrificed their lives when their ship, The Dorchester, was sunk in the North Atlantic during World War II. In May, the Heard Museum opened an exhibition showcasing 28 selections from a ledger book made by six artists from the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation between the late 1870s and 1882. “Line Dance,” created in the 1880s by an a now unknown Cheyenne artist using graphite, ink and paint, is just one of the ledger art examples in a new exhibit (artwork, bequest of Carolann Smurthwaite; photo courtesy of Heard Museum).
